Terra Australis bei Downies

Die Ausnahme von der Regel. Diese Auktion habe ich nicht besucht, deshalb fällt der "Bericht" auch sehr kurz aus.

In Down Under versteigerte das Auktionshaus Downies vom 10. - 12.

Worthing Mining Company South Australia 1849 and 1861 (2 certificates) The first item a very early example of Australian mining scrip. South Australia , with her vast copper deposits, was the first state involved in large scale mining for metals, pre-dating the discoveries of gold in Victoria and New South Wales . The Worthing Mining Co was formed in 1849 following the discovery of copper deposits at Hallett Cove. The Hallett Cove mine failed but the company survived by taking control in the 1850's and early 1860's of several of more successful copper mines including those at Callington and Kanmantoo

Australian Agricultural Company, certificate for ten Subscriber's Shares of £100 each London 4th May 1825 in name of Alexander Begbie of Wimbledon Surrey, vignette of Sydney township and harbour The Australian Agricultural Company was founded in London in 1824 with the aim of production of merino wool in the Colony for export back to England. On the basis of their dividends shareholders had the option of receiving back interest profits and later their capital, or to trade their shares for land capital. Because of the success of the production many shareholders exchanged their shares for land claims and so the majority of the share certificates were likely destroyed, making this a very rare survivor of one of the earliest agricultural enterprises in Australia

In 1890 Terry's became Carlton & West End Breweries Ltd, which was the forerunner to Carlton and United Breweries, the first two certificates thus representing the beginnings of the present corporation. Michael Liebig states that both are very rare and are not represented in Carlton 's historic files, the signatures on each being rarities themselves

Two higher value certificates of particular interest - the first company is a precursor to the famous Carlton & United Breweries Limited that reigned supreme in the 20th Century (and kept many of us happy!); the second almost certainly purchased by a relative.
